HATS!

Concept Doodles help to release stress and have some fun in between all the stuff you have to do for your job.

This set of Doodles is basically about HATS! From the time I was a kid, I've always loved wearing hats. So for this session of Doodles I made different hats on some humans and hats on some basic creatures.

What do you do to release stress on a daily basis?

Peach Blossom

Some years ago I worked on a picture book concept called "Peach Blossom's Birthday Party" and did a ton of drawings for it. Here are a couple of those drawings with the color versions.

Get your ticket to INK TOWN!

My NEW Art Book, available on Amazon now.

As an artist I tend to draw everywhere I go. Buses, cars, trains, planes, coffee houses, restaurants, etc. Annoying everyone that I have a relationship with. But it did help me constantly to work out ideas for working in the game biz, picture book biz and to amuse friends and strangers. I love drawing and can draw all day.

This book is filled with a simpler style then I do when I'm doodling or working on concepts for work. Many of them are funny and some are sad. (but not many)
I think you'll get a lot of fun from this book for years and years. With some of these drawings that may become actual stories. Or you can make up your own stories based on one or more of these drawings. Either way it's a great book for you, your family or your friends. And maybe a few strangers. Get your copy today!

Quirky Ink Drawings

A few years ago I decided to use a thick ink brush pen (Tombow ABT N15) to do some striped down, simple and quirky ink drawings. This was so much fun. Need to do more soon.

I only have names for three of them. Middle Left: "Guitar with Puppets"

Bottom Left: "Coffee Well of Souls" and the Bottom Right: "Planet of Robots at Sunset"

Newbies

For so much of what we do as artists in the game biz, we concentrate on so many tiny details and making sure we get all the items in that a game needs to attract eyes. A simpler approach is just as appealing and can be done faster and at a lower cost. And there are plenty of examples out there.

Here is just one example of a concept that I pitched but sadly, didn't go anywhere. I'm not a game play designer so my thoughts about how to play the game was about as simple as the art for the game. I still think it could have worked.

IM Game Screens

When I was working at this big company in Redmond, I was tasked with creating Instant Messenger Games for about 6 months. The first one they wanted me to design, do animations for and to go over the way that all worked together with the one programmer I worked with in China, was the game "GO".

I made a bamboo wood board for the pieces to rest on, made a bamboo themed background and then designed the game parts on the left side.
The screen on the upper left was for a seasonal solitaire game. This was the "Autumn" Solitaire screen. We wanted each seasonal screen to feel immersive and have a natural flow to them. The buttons on the right were the three levels of the game that you could play.
The bottom left screen was for a letters game in which you had to adopt/buy letters to spell words.
The "Blob Alert" screen on the lower right was for a game that didn't get finished but I like how several of the screens turned out.
After that I moved to another project. But I did about 4 other game concept drawings before I left.
I might show those at another time.

Ink Drawings

When I'm not working on a project at a job or at home, I'll doing a lot of drawing just to get the ideas out of my head. Love drawing and it doesn't matter if it's in pencil or ink. Each has its own way of working with the ideas that come out of my head. Sometimes it's a matter of feeling. There are times with it feels like I should be drawing that idea in ink. Other times it will feel that a pencil approach would be better.

These drawings are from my "Book of Doodles Vol 3", which is still available on Amazon. Get your copy today.

Alfred Hitchcock Portrait

Last weekend I was doing a quick line drawing portrait of Alfred Hitchcock, for practice, cause you gotta kept them skills up, and I thought, why not add some color. So I did and this is what the final looks like. Done on my iPad Pro using ProCreate.

Being a bit of life long Cinephile, I got used to seeing certain names in the credits on old movies and new movies. I'm a fan of so many directors and cinematographers, designers, etc... it's a long list.

So over the pandemic I started to revisit old movies and some more current ones. I'll get on a jag and see several from one director or star and then switch over to others as the last few years went by.

Hitchcock was one of those directors that had very long resume of movies. Some in black and white, others in color. Over all he was one of the masters of building tension and keeping the eye of the viewer on the movie till the very end. I don't think he relied on much in the way of special effects until his film "North by NorthWest" which is a stunning movie. Quite the visual treat, albeit static when viewed by today's standards of special effects.

Definitely worth checking out.

Munchkins

Love doing character poses. Especially with a fun concept. Here are a few from a game I worked on some years ago. Everyone did great work on that project and it was great to see what others came up with. We each had scenes to work on for the game. These are just a few of the poses for characters that were mostly extras in that scene.

TRIBBETS

On a project some years ago, I was tasked with creating as many different types of "Tribbets" for a game. I would do 25 of them a day. After I finished each batch the PM and I went over them to see which ones would fit and which ones to reject. Rarely got any of them rejected but a few had changes that needed to be made. Not a problem.

I had such a blast creating these little creatures. Here are just a small sampling of "Tribbets".

Saturday morning Doodle

Today's Saturday morning Doodle... it started out as a caricature of David Bowie but went awry. 😁

4 Square Portraits in Blue

Here's another round of portraits. Starting on the upper left and going clockwise... An acquaintance from a few years ago, then my old friend Bob, then my old friend Lori.
Now, can you guess that 4th portrait on the lower left?

I did all these portraits with a Hoh-i-Noor Polychromos dark blue pencil 3800 / #19 on drawing paper.

Game art from the ones I've worked on.

First in a series of art from games past that I've worked on. When working on a game, there needs to be some background elements and working on them should be fun. These images were done for billboards in the backgrounds for a game I was working on some years ago. I had a lot of fun coming up with these. Some of which were based on stylings from the 1950s and 60s. Mid Century Modern fun. I have a couple more that were based on the stylings of the 1970s. I don't show them here because they are so different from this grouping.
