Rough background sketches

ðŸ§ªðŸŽ® Concept sketching for game backgrounds is one of my favorite parts of the creative process. For this project, I was tasked with designing a computer/science laboratory setting. I started with a general idea and dove into online research—looking at real-world labs, tech setups, and scientific workspaces to get a feel for what kinds of items belong in that environment.

Using Photoshop and a handful of pencil brushes, I roughed out three different versions of the lab, each from a unique point of view and with different arrangements of equipment, furniture, and tech. These are super rough sketches—just enough to explore layout, mood, and storytelling potential.

Once I had the three versions, I met with my art manager to discuss which one might work best for the characters that will eventually be placed in the scene. It’s all about finding the right balance between visual interest and functional space for gameplay.

Swipe through to see one of the early sketches—complete with monitors, flasks, control panels, and even a whiteboard scribbled with equations. It’s messy, but that’s where the magic starts.
