Haunted Village

These are the kind of projects I love working on because they have so many parts to them that are woven into one big image and each part gave me the freedom to come up with something fun.

This Halloween-themed village scene began as a series of rough concept sketches created in Photoshop, based on suggestions from my manager. The goal was to build a whimsical, character-rich environment with four distinct landmarks: A costume shop, a haunted house, a potion hut, and a cemetery.

I started with a vertical layout to emphasize the towering moonlit sky and layered architecture. Using very loose digital pencil work in Photoshop, I quickly blocked in expressive silhouettes and mood, focusing on the interplay between buildings, characters, and atmosphere.

As the concept evolved, I pivoted to a horizontal format to better showcase the village’s narrative flow and allow for more interaction between characters. This shift opened up the composition, guiding the viewer’s eye from the glowing streetlamp and winding path to the airborne creatures and moonlit treetops—enhancing both clarity and storytelling.

The Costume Shop became the heart of the scene, glowing warmly and inviting trick-or-treaters with playful signage and cozy textures.

The haunted house leaned into crooked geometry and eerie shadows.

The potion hut added rustic charm and mystery, nestled among twisted trees and glowing potions.

The cemetery anchored the far end of the village, with tilted gravestones, spectral lighting, and subtle humor woven into its design.

Painting the final color art in Photoshop, I kept most colors on the cool side with warm colors where lighting was present.

Pokeween

Creating this piece was an absolute blast, to dive into spooky whimsy with a lot of creative freedom. I had so much fun making eerie landscapes and letting the Halloween vibe lead the way. The team I worked with was fantastic—supportive, sharp-eyed, and respectful of the vision—offering just a few thoughtful tweaks that made the final piece even stronger. It was one of those projects where the process felt as playful and satisfying as the end result.

Dungeon Library

 For Creepy October Monday...

This background was originally concepted as a group sketch on a whiteboard—a rough idea for a trivia and word-finding game set in a creepy, underground library chamber. I took that initial brainstorm and developed a tighter composition, refining the layout and atmosphere to support gameplay and narrative.

Using Photoshop, I painted the final color art with a focus on mood and detail: warm lighting against cold stone, arched windows with a central round table scattered with clues. The exposed pipes, candelabras, and raised lectern hint at forgotten rituals and hidden knowledge. Every element was placed to invite exploration and make players feel like they’ve stepped into a place where words have power.

Tiki Cave with fire!

 For the holiday season...

Revisiting an older concept piece that still resonates. I originally sketched it years ago using red Polychromos pencil to capture the energy and rhythm of a fiery, ritualistic underworld. The skeletal structures, glowing platforms, and looming architectural face were designed to evoke surveillance and judgment. After locking in the composition, I refined it digitally to push the lighting, texture, and mood. Even now, it feels like a moment frozen in a larger, surreal narrative.

Saturday Morning Doodle

This weekend's Saturday Morning Doodle... (actually got it done in the morning.

Arts A Glow

Met up with some friends at the Burien Arts A Glow tonight at the Town Square Park.

Usually these type of events with lights will happen later in September or in October but this one was early.
It was very well attended and had a very warm, small town feel all night. Nice people in Burien.

Rough background sketches

ðŸ§ªðŸŽ® Concept sketching for game backgrounds is one of my favorite parts of the creative process. For this project, I was tasked with designing a computer/science laboratory setting. I started with a general idea and dove into online research—looking at real-world labs, tech setups, and scientific workspaces to get a feel for what kinds of items belong in that environment.

Using Photoshop and a handful of pencil brushes, I roughed out three different versions of the lab, each from a unique point of view and with different arrangements of equipment, furniture, and tech. These are super rough sketches—just enough to explore layout, mood, and storytelling potential.

Once I had the three versions, I met with my art manager to discuss which one might work best for the characters that will eventually be placed in the scene. It’s all about finding the right balance between visual interest and functional space for gameplay.

Swipe through to see one of the early sketches—complete with monitors, flasks, control panels, and even a whiteboard scribbled with equations. It’s messy, but that’s where the magic starts.
